Este verano he estado leyendo Civic Media. Technology I Design I Practice, un compendio editado por Eric Gordon y Paul Mihailidis. Es un poco droga dura, pero me van estos libros, como aquel From social butterfly to engaged citizen. Urban informatics, social media, ubiquitous computing, and mobile technology to support citizen engagement.

Countless people around the world harness the affordances of digital media to enable democratic participation, coordinate disaster relief, campaign for policy change, and strengthen local advocacy groups. The world watched as activists used social media to organize protests during the Arab Spring, Occupy Wall Street, and Hong Kong’s Umbrella Revolution. Many governmental and community organizations changed their mission and function as they adopted new digital tools and practices. This book examines the use of “civic media”—the technologies, designs, and practices that support connection through common purpose in civic, political, and social life. Scholars from a range of disciplines and practitioners from a variety of organizations offer analyses and case studies that explore the theory and practice of civic media.
The book identifies the emerging field of Civic Media by bringing together leading scholars and practitioners from a diversity of disciplines to shape theory, identify problems and articulate opportunities. The book includes 19 chapters (and 25 case studies) from fields as diverse as philosophy, communications, education, sociology, media studies, art, policy and philanthropy, and attempts to find common language and common purpose through the investigation of civic media.
What is Civic Media?Civic life is comprised of the attention and actions an individual devotes to a common good.Participating in a human rights rally, creating and sharing a video online about unfair laborpractices, connecting with neighbors after a natural disaster: these are all civic actions whereinthe actor seeks to benefit a perceived common good, beyond the boundaries of their intimate orprofessional spheres.Civic media are the practices of designing, building, implementing or using digital tools tointervene in or participate in civic life.El libro está construido a partir de 5 bloques:
- Foundations + Theory
- Systems + Design
- Play + Resitance
- Learning + Engagement
- Community + Action
